Self-Tapes

Below, are three self-tapes that highlights key techniques I have in each discipline. Showing skills in each section of the performing arts conveys my open mind for different opportunities in the industry. This will make me more employable to agents and casting directors. These self-tapes are important to show my current skillset and that I can portray different characters. This evidence can give me opportunities in the individual fields of acting, dance and singing whether its an acting workshop, a dance class or to be a lead singer in a band. 

Singing

This song is 'Somebody to Love' from the musical We will Rock You. I'm playing the role of Scaramouche, a girl that struggles to fit in but is strong-willed and dedicated to make a statement. This song uses a rock-style voice therefore, I'm showcasing my belt and mixed voice while covering a lot of my vocal range. I experimented with vocal placements and facial expressions to express emotion and change my tone throughout the song. This could me down the route of performing pop songs or being a backing vocalist for modern bands. An example of a pop music agent to contact is 'Wassaman Music,' The vocal range of this song is Aâ™­2 to a C5.

Dancing

This dance is a section of 'Holding out for a Hero' from the show Footloose. This dance is sassy and gives me an opportunity to showcase character through movement for an audience by having a certain stage presence and body language. I'm demonstrating my body language to have extension when doing larger and more impactful gestures and I can show my enthusiasm for moving around on stage. Routes that I could take include dancing in music videos as this dance is energetic and jazzy. Also, attending a dance company that will do physical theatre can be beneficial as this means I'm still acting through dance. 

Acting

This monologue is from a contemporary play called 'Risk' by John Retallack and the type cast for this play is a 18 year old girl. This character is struggling with inner conflict as she is experiencing the life of peer pressure. By using change of tone, body language, emphasis and believability, I can present a character that goes through a cycle of emotions. I dived deep into the monologue and would analyse it so I can experiment with staging and gestures. This project has given me a starting point in my acting journey and shows I can become a character on stage instead of just playing a character. To develop my skills further, auditioning for straight acting for acting companies that do Shakespeare plays will be appropriate. As well as this, acting for television shows will help me gain experience for more serious acting. In addition, I could audition for a company like Splendid to partake in acting workshops in educational settings.

· Creating and uploading self-tapes showcases my individual talents and highlights my acting, dancing and singing skills. It shows my type cast and ability at what skill level I’m at and my potential. ​

  • My acting video shows me doing a contemporary monologue that shows how I can interpret and convey emotion and build on a character.​

  • My singing video shows my voice types and my different tones I convey through song. ​

  • My dancing video shows my co-ordination, balance, movement memory, stage presence and constant energy levels. ​

· Areas like television credits, film credits, ability to play an instrument will help me to promote myself as a well-rounded professional performer. ​

  • In the musical theatre industry, casting a show is a very thorough process in which they want actors who look like the character. They will pay attention to an actor’s type cast, including: body type, facial features, height and weight. This varies from the film industry as there is more diversity in television. 

​

  • The type cast of a theatre character is very important and they expect the performers to have a similar range and voice type for that character in order to have a chance of getting the role. ​
